Mirasys Sales & Business Development Director, Udo Schneider, wrote about this strategic issue for the German magazine Security Insight. See below the printed article and its brief summary in English.
"If we deal with the products and solutions of video surveillance technology today, it seems as if video content analysis (VCA) is now a very simple tool for dealing with the immense volume of data in video recordings.
Almost every camera and video management system today offers a wide range of VCA functions. The classification of objects, the recognition of faces or the license plate recognition on vehicles are no longer a problem according to the datasheets of the relevant providers. Many manufacturers even go one step further and now also offer artificial intelligence (AI) solutions in order to be able to evaluate video content in an even more targeted and strongly behaviour-oriented manner.
When we still had motion detection available, the use of this technology was relatively straightforward: we knew the limits of this technology and were able to adapt to it. However, anyone who has ever commissioned a video surveillance system with a VCA will have recognized that the use of VCA is very dependent on various factors. We find ourselves very quickly in a project mode, suddenly need more time and budget to achieve a useful use of the VCA in our system.
So it is better to combine the use of VCA with a project right from the start. This applies even more to the planned use of artificial intelligence since systems and networks are taught here in a manner that focuses on a defined behavior.
This article generally describes the implementation of VCA or AI in their different phases."
